The cover story on the issue of OC Weekly hitting the newstands today focuses on how the wake of Prop 8 has encouraged unity for those who support gay rights.
The article will also be posted online (
www.ocweekly.com) though there is usually a little lag time between the print release and online posting (a day or so, I'm guessing).
I haven't had an opportunity to read the whole article yet but it appears to give considerable and positive coverage to OCEC. I…

When I got married in California in 1959 there were almost 20 states where marriage was limited to two people of different sexes and the same race. Eight years later the Supreme Court unanimously declared state bans on interracial marriage unconstitutional.
Recently, Ted Olson and I brought a lawsuit asking the courts to now declare unconstitutional California's Proposition 8 limitation of marriage to people of the opposite sex. We acted together because of our mutual commitment…

Hello All My Orange County Friends! I am Dawn Clifford, and I represent a small growing LGBTA Club at Victor Valley College. Our purpose is to get connected with different communities, and help keep the family educated on health, issues, and having fun too. We are located in the high desert of California, off the 15 FWY To Barstow. As the vice president of the club, I would like to extend an invitation to anyone to join us. I know it is a far drive, but maybe there are people out there that didn…

Lt. Dan Choi flashes onto the screen as Colbert laughs at the absurdity of Don't Ask, Don't Tell from Baghdad while entertaining our troops. Well worth watching. I wish someone with an I.Q. would put a link to it from here to www.hulu.com where the entire episode can be viewed for free.

Since the disappointing Supreme Court decision on May 26, 2009, momentum has been building towards placing marriage equality on the ballot in 2010. At this point, it looks like it is going to happen.
So the question is, what are we going to do about it? November 2010 is a long way away. But Team Courage Orange County is not going to wait for the signatures to be collected, for the proposition to be made official, and for the campaigns to kick off. We are building our organization NOW. We're est…

On Sunday May 31st 2009, a day after the huge success of MITM, a leadership summit was held in Fresno California. While only 60 were expected, over 200 leaders and muckrakers from the LGBT movement attended this conference. I was fortunate enough to be among thi…

When I heard the TV announcement, it took a moment for it to sink in.
"Prop 8 upheld."
It's like I know something so clearly within myself - that equality means the same rights for everyone - and then I hear somebody say, "That doesn't matter."
It's so incongruous that it doesn't make sense.
When I finally realized what those words meant, I just shook my head in disbelief, pulled up my proverbial boot straps and resigned to keep fighting.
The ruling makes sense from a constitutional legality s…

I am straight and have been happily married for 22 years. I am also a Christian.
My parents, who I consider progessive thinkers by the standards of the rural place they grew up in, had trouble accepting the concept of gay marriage (both passed away several years ago).
Currently, my church is struggling with gay affirmation issues, and given the deep divisions within the membership has been slow and deliberate in addressing the issue within the context of our church life. However, there are aff…

Julian Bond's speech at HRC dinner on March 14, 2009 in L.A.
Bond nails our Prop 8 debacle when he says:
..."what these people want, is to install a Christian Caliphate in America, replacing laws debated by men with laws dictated by religion. These are Cafeteria Christians --picking a biblical injunction from column A while ignoring those from columns B through Z. Now, Leviticus 25:44 states: I may possess many slaves both male and female provided they're purchased from neighboring nations. Do…

However, Has Yet to Take Action to End Second Class Status of LBGT CITIZENS!
Let me be completely honest with myself and with you. In the beginning I was waiting with bated breathe for Obama to take office and cure the ills of my country. And certainly, since I'm a one-issue voter, I'd placed equal rights, in the form of same-gender marriage, at the very top of my wish list. Needless to say I was saddened, disheartened to my core, when a fellow with a brain informed me: "No Allison, even the LG…
